LTLord Alfred Tennyson
Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, FRS (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and remains one of the most popular poets in the English language. Tennyson excelled at penning short lyrics, including "In the valley of Cauteretz", "Break, break, break", "The Charge of the Light Brigade", "Tears, idle tears" and "Crossing the Bar". Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, although In Memoriam A.H.H. was written to commemorate his best friend Arthur Hallam, a fellow poet and classmate at Trinity College, Cambridge, who was engaged to Tennyson's sister, but died from a cerebral hemorrhage before they were married. Tennyson also wrote some notable blank verse including Idylls of the King, Ulysses, and Tithonus. During his career, Tennyson attempted drama, but his plays enjoyed little success. William Carlos Williams (September 17, 1883 – March 4, 1963), also known as WCW, was an American poet closely associated with modernism and Imagism. He was also a pediatrician and general practitioner of medicine. Williams "worked harder at being a writer than he did at being a physician," wrote biographer Linda Wagner-Martin; but during his long lifetime, Williams excelled at both. Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, a community near the city of Paterson.[1] His father was an English immigrant, and his mother was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He attended a public school in Rutherford until 1896, then was sent to study at Château de Lancy near Geneva, Switzerland, the Lycée Condorcet in Paris, France, for two years and Horace Mann School in New York City. Abū-Muḥammad Muṣliḥ al-Dīn bin Abdallāh Shīrāzī, better known by his pen-name as Saʿdī or, simply, Saadi, was one of the major Persian poets of the medieval period. He is not only famous in Persian-speaking countries, but he has also been quoted in western sources. He is recognized for the quality of his writings, and for the depth of his social and moral thoughts. A native of Shiraz, his father died when he was an infant. Cécile Sauvage, fille aînée de trois enfants de Marie Jolivet et de Prosper Sauvage, professeur d’histoire et de géographie, naît le 20 juillet 1883 à La Roche-sur-Yon. Elle épouse Pierre Messiaen le 8 septembre 1907 dans l’église de Sieyes, un faubourg de Digne où habitent ses parents. Ils auront deux enfants, Alain, (poète) et Olivier Messiaen, (musicien), qu'elle éleva, selon ce dernier, dans un « univers féerique ». Elle décède le 26 août 1927. Sa poésie est très proche de la nature et on a surnommé Cécile Sauvage, la « poétesse de la maternité ». Bernanos, dans un bref hommage, dira d’elle : « L’œuvre de Cécile Sauvage est pure. Mais d’une pureté vivante, pure comme une vie pure, avec on ne sait quelle douce malice agreste, et parfois, tout à coup, le brusque écart d’une ombrageuse fierté… ».
