He was also the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy and was one of the five members of the group known as the Fireside Poets. Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, and studied at Bowdoin College. After spending time in Europe he became a professor at Bowdoin and, later, at Harvard College. His first major poetry collections were Voices of the Night (1839) and Ballads and Other Poems (1841). Longfellow retired from teaching in 1854 to focus on his writing, living the remainder of his life in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in a former headquarters of George Washington. His first wife, Mary Potter, died in 1835 after a miscarriage. His second wife, Frances Appleton, died in 1861...

Lawrence (1885-1930), scriitor, critic, poet si pictor englez, a fost una dintre cele mai proeminente figuri ale literaturii engleze a secolului XX. “Snake” si “ How Beastly the Bourgeoisie is” sunt probabil cele mai popularizate poezii. David Herbert Lawrence s-a nascut pe 11 septembrie 1885 in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, in centrul Angliei. Era al patrulea copil al unui miner sarac si alcoolic. Mama lui D.H. Lawrence era o fosta invatatoare, cu o educatie mult superioara celei a sotului sau. Copilaria lui Lawrence a fost dominata de saracie si de neintelegerile dintre parintii sai. Primește o bursă la Nottingham High School și lucrează ca funcționar într-o fabrică de instrumente chirurgicale. După terminarea studiilor la Nottingham University, devine profesor la vârsta de 22 de ani. Mama lui Lawrence a murit in 1910, el ajutand-o sa moara cu o supradoza de somnifer.
