Born: 8 December 1894 Birthplace: Columbus, Ohio Death: 2 November 1961 (complications from a stroke) Best Known As: Author of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Thurber\'s witty short stories and lumpy cartoons were a popular mainstay of The New Yorker magazine in the 1930s and 1940s. A Midwestern boy with an urbane twist, Thurber mixed comical reminiscences of his Ohio childhood with wry observations on modern times and the battle of the sexes. (His best-known story is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the tale of a henpecked husband who escapes into heroic daydreams.) Louis-Ferdinand Céline was the pen name of French writer and doctor Louis-Ferdinand Destouches (27 May 1894 – 1 July 1961). The name "Céline" was chosen after his grandmother's first name. Céline is considered one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century, developing a new style of writing that modernized both French and World literature. He remains, however, a controversial figure because of anti-Semitic statements published in 1937 and during the Second World War. Only child of Ferdinand-Auguste Destouches and Marguerite-Louise-Céline Guilloux, he was born Louis-Ferdinand Destouches in 1894 at Courbevoie, just outside Paris in the Seine département (now Hauts-de-Seine). His father was a minor functionary in an insurance firm and his mother was a lacemaker. Umberto Saba (9 March 1883 - 26 August 1957) was the pseudonym of Italian poet and novelist Umberto Poli. His creative work was hampered by a life-long struggle with mental illness. Saba was born in Trieste, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He had Italian citizenship through his father. His mother was Jewish. His father abandoned the family before Umberto was born, and his mother employed a Slovene nanny, Peppa Sabaz, to raise him. He became very attached to her, and revered her memory in his poetry. From 1903-1904, he attended the University of Pisa, where he studied archaeology, German, and Latin. In was in this period that he began to complain of a nervous disorder, which was to become more severe with time. Quitting school, Saba worked for a time as an apprentice and was a cabin-boy on a merchant ship. From 1907-1908 he served in the military in Salerno.
