Lewis Carroll [pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832-1898), English author, mathematician, and Anglican clergyman wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865); Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next….then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labelled ‘ORANGE MARMALADE’, but to her great disappointment it was empty: (Ch. 1) And thus begins Alice’s fantastical adventures that have endured in their popularity for over a century, influencing contemporary authors, artists, musicians and inspiring adaptations to the stage and screen. Carroll’s particular mix of creativity, fantasy, word play, satire, nonsense, and dry wit have gained him iconic status in popular culture with...

Umberto Saba
Umberto Saba (9 March 1883 - 26 August 1957) was the pseudonym of Italian poet and novelist Umberto Poli. His creative work was hampered by a life-long struggle with mental illness. Saba was born in Trieste, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He had Italian citizenship through his father. His mother was Jewish. His father abandoned the family before Umberto was born, and his mother employed a Slovene nanny, Peppa Sabaz, to raise him. He became very attached to her, and revered her memory in his poetry. From 1903-1904, he attended the University of Pisa, where he studied archaeology, German, and Latin. In was in this period that he began to complain of a nervous disorder, which was to become more severe with time. Quitting school, Saba worked for a time as an apprentice and was a cabin-boy on a merchant ship. From 1907-1908 he served in the military in Salerno. He married Carolina Wölfler in 1909, and they had a daughter, Lina, the following year. By 1928, Saba was suffering...

Manuel Acuña
Manuel Acuña Narro (27 August 1849 – 6 December 1873) was a 19th-century Mexican writer. He focused on poetry, but also wrote some novels and plays. Even though he was famous at an early time of his life, he decided to commit suicide. It is not certain why he killed himself, but it is thought that he did so because of a woman. Acuña was born in the city of Saltillo, Coahuila, on August 27, 1849 to Francisco Acuña and Refugio Narro. He was taught how to write and read at an early age. Later he studied in the “Colegio Josefino”, in Saltillo. Around 1865 he was transferred to Mexico City to the School of San Ildefonso, where he entered as a full time student. Here he studied mathematics, Latin, French and philosophy. Acuña lived at a time at which Mexican society was dominated by philosophical-positivist intellectuality. Furthermore he was living as a romantic tendency in poetry was occurring. In January 1868, Acuña initiated his studies in medicine at the...

Felicia Mariana Orban
"Nu sunt ce par a fi - Nu sunt Nimic din ce-aș fi vrut să fiu! Dar fiindcă m-am născut fără să știu, Sau prea curând Sau poate prea târziu... M-am resemnat, ca orice bun creștin, Si n-am rămas decât..." Cea care sunt!... Mai concret: Numele meu este, așa cum scrie in caseta de sus, Felicia Mariana Orban. Data nașteri: 7 februarie 1978. 1993 – 1997 Liceul Teoretic "Al. I Cuza" – Ploiești (profilul Chimie – Biologie) 1998 – 2002 Facultatea de Limbi și Literaturi Străine din cadrul Universității "Spiru Haret" București, specializarea Engleză – Germană. Momentan… visătoare. În viitorul apropiat… profesoară. Mai târziu… time will tell!

Adam Duritz
[[eng]] Adam Duritz is an innovative lyricist and piano player who brings the same soul to his friends and lifestyle as he does to the beautiful lyrics and music that he performs. Duritz joined and performed in the Bay area band "The Himalayans" until 1991 at which time he left to form Counting Crows. Before he left, however, material was recorded which eventually lead to the release of the 2002 album "She likes the Weather". The album has a track called "round here" which was eventually re-recorded on the Counting Crows album "August and Everything After". During this period in his life he was also involved in the San Francisco based band 'Sordid Humour'. After the Himalayans lost Duritz and the Counting Crows were formed, Duritz's new band gained a huge following and the release of their acclaimed 1993 album was a huge success. The band toured extensively before heading into the studio again for the 1996 album "recovering the satelites". The album was a worthy follow up and it...

Ivan V. Laliæ
Ivan V. Laliæ (born June 8, 1931 - died July 28, 1996) was a Serbian poet with a reputation as one of the finest European poets of his time. Laliæ was born into a cultured family in Belgrade; his father, Vlajko, was a journalist, and his grandfather Isidor Bajiæ was a celebrated composer. As a child he experienced the trauma of seeing many of his school-friends perish in an air-raid. Laliæ said that "my childhood and boyhood in the war marked everything I ever wrote as a poem or poetry". Laliæ lived in both Zagreb and Belgrade, and spent the summers with his family in the Istrian town of Rovinj. He was survived by his Croatian wife, Branka, and his younger son. Laliæ was awarded with the most prestigious literary prizes in Yugoslavia. He was admired abroad and books of his poems have been translated into six languages (English, French, Italian, Polish, Hungarian and Macedonian). Individual poems have appeared in more than 20 languages. In her obituary of him, Celia Hawkesworth spoke...

Anna Sewell
Anna Sewell (30 March 1820 – 25 April 1878) was an English novelist, best known as the author of the classic novel Black Beauty. Anna Mary Sewell was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England into a devoutly Quaker family. Her father was Isaac Phillip Sewell (1793-1879), and her mother, Mary Wright Sewell (1798 - 1884) was a successful author of children's books. Anna Sewell had one sibling, a younger brother named Philip Sewell. Anna Sewell was largely educated at home. When Anna was twelve years old, the family moved to Stoke Newington, where Sewell attended school for the first time. Two years later, however, she slipped while walking home from school and severely injured both of her ankles. Her father took a job in Brighton in 1836, partly in the hope that the climate there would help to cure her. Despite this, and most likely because of mistreatment of her injury, for the rest of her life Anna was unable to stand without a crutch or to walk for any length of time. For greater...
