He was also the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy and was one of the five members of the group known as the Fireside Poets. Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, and studied at Bowdoin College. After spending time in Europe he became a professor at Bowdoin and, later, at Harvard College. His first major poetry collections were Voices of the Night (1839) and Ballads and Other Poems (1841). Longfellow retired from teaching in 1854 to focus on his writing, living the remainder of his life in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in a former headquarters of George Washington. Louis McKee (born July 31, 1951, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) has been a fixture of the Philadelphia poetry scene since the early 70s. He is the author of Schuylkill County (Wampeter, 1982), The True Speed of Things (Slash & Burn, 1984) and eleven other collections. More recently, he has published River Architecture: Poems from Here & There 1973-1993 (Cynic, 1999), Loose Change (Marsh River Editions, 2001) and a volume in the Pudding House Greatest Hits series. Gerald Stern has called his work “heart-breaking” and “necessary,” while William Stafford has written, “Louis McKee makes me think of how much fun it was to put your hand out a car window and make the air carry you into quick adventures and curlicues. I-Ioan Al. Brătescu -Voinești
Ioan Alexandru Brătescu-Voinești (n. 1 ianuarie 1868, Târgoviște - d. 14 decembrie 1946, București) a fost un prozator român, faimos pentru povestirile sale, scrise pentru copiii săi. Ioan Alexandru Brătescu-Voinești vede lumina zilei la Târgoviște, în anul 1868, ca descendent al unei familii de boieri. Eroul din nuvela „Neamul Udreștilor” e un strămoș al scriitorului. A făcut Liceul și Universitatea la București. A fost judecător în București, Ploiești, Pitești, Craiova și Târgoviște, unde în anul 1896 s-a stabilit definitiv. A fost membru al Academiei Române. În anul 1945 a câștigat Premiul Național Pentru Proză. Nuvelele și schițele sunt partea teoretică a operei sale. Este cunoscut și pentru scrierile sale pentru copii: „Puiul” (tragica moarte a unui pui de prepeliță), „Privighetoarea”, „Bietul Tric”, „Niculăiță Minciună” (un copil isteț de la țară neînțeles de săteni), ș.a. S-a stins din viață în anul 1946.

Tom Waits
In the 1970s, Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate, lowlife characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle, which he sang about in a raspy, gravelly voice. From the '80s on, his work became increasingly theatrical as he moved into acting and composing. Growing up in southern California, Waits attracted the attention of manager Herb Cohen, who also handled Frank Zappa, and was signed by him at the beginning of the 1970s, resulting in the material later released as The Early Years and The Early Years, Vol. 2. His formal recording debut came with Closing Time (1973) on Asylum Records, an album that contained "Ol' 55," which was covered by labelmates the Eagles for their On the Border album. Waits attracted critical acclaim and a cult audience for his subsequent albums, The Heart of Saturday Night (1974), the two-LP live set Nighthawks at the Diner (1975), Small Change (1976), Foreign Affairs (1977), Blue Valentine (1978), and Heart Attack and Vine (1980)....
