Poet Fleur Adcock was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 10 February 1934, but spent much of her childhood, including the war years, in England. She studied Classics at Victoria University in Wellington and taught at the University of Otago, moving to London in 1963 where she worked as a librarian at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. She has held various literary fellowships, including a period at the Charlotte Mason College of Education, Ambleside (1977-78). Later she held the Northern Arts Fellowship at the Universities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Durham (1979-81), where she met the composer Gillian Whitehead with whom she collaborated on a song cycle libretto and later a full-length opera about Eleanor of Aquitaine. In 1984 she was Writing Fellow at the University of East Anglia. She has been writing full-time since 1981. Joseph Jacobs (29 August 1854 - 30 January 1916) was a literary and Jewish historian. He was a writer for the Jewish Encyclopaedia and a notable folklorist, creating several noteworthy collections of fairy tales. Jacobs was born in Sydney,Australia, the son of John and Sarah Jacobs. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and at the University of Sydney, where he won a scholarship for classics, mathematics and chemistry. The son of a military man, Cernuda received a strict education as a child, and then studied law at the University of Seville, where he met the poet and literature professor Pedro Salinas. In 1928, after his mother died, Cernuda left his hometown, with which he had all his life an intense love-hate relationship. He briefly moved to Madrid, where he quickly became part of the literary scene. Louis Joseph Vance was born on September 19, 1879 in New York, New York (although some sources say Washington, DC). He was an American fiction writer of short stories, novels and screenplays. Vance was the son of Wilson and Lillie Beall Vance. Originally, Vance wanted to become an artist and illustrator and attended the Art Students League and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Silvio C. Cantelli EXETER - Silvio C. Cantelli, 80, of 8 Hampton Road, died Friday, March 28, 2003 at SunBridge for Exeter. He was born Feb. 15, 1923 in Boston, the son of the late Carlo and Maria (Giberti) Cantelli. He was raised in Somerville, Mass., where he was a 1944 graduate of Somerville High School. He had resided for many years in Cambridge, Mass., before moving to Exeter in 1999. He worked as a factory clerk for Cambion Inc., a Cambridge electronics manufacturer. Mr. Cantelli is survived by a son, Stephen C. Cantelli of Exeter; a sister, Rena A. Stahlman of Winchester, Mass.; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; and several cousins.

Tom Waits
