By the time he was twelve, he was composing and mounting concerts and dramatic works in the hall above his family\'s quarters in the Gemeindehaus. Talentat și prodigios traducător din literatura universală (Petrarca, La Fontaine, Baudelaire, O. Wilde, Goethe, Turgheniev, Lessing, Heine, Lenau etc.), poetul Barbu Nemțeanu (pe numele adevărat Benjamin Deutsch) s-a născut în octombrie 1887, la Galați, fiul lui Iacob și Sanina Deutsch. Tatăl a fost institutor la școala izraelită din acest oraș. Moare tânăr, lăsându-l pe Barbu Nemțeanu la vârsta de 10 ani unicul sprijinitor al familiei. Ocupă diferite funcții (practicant de birou, reporter, funcționar etc.). În 1904, poetul debutează la ziarul gălățean Înainte, transformat după război în Galații noi.
