TSTaneda Santôka
Taneda Santōka, birth name: Taneda Shōichi; 3 December 1882 - 11 October 1940) was the pen-name of a Japanese author and haiku poet. He is known for his free verse haiku. Santoka, an ordained Zen priest, after spending most of his life wandering all over the country as a begging monk, chose to settle in Matsuyama only to die 10 months later. The humble cottage where he dwelt -- Isso-an (A Blade of Grass Hermitage) is preserved north of Ehime University. His books and documents are also preserved in Shiki Memorial Museum. "In February of 1929 I received ordination as a monk and became resident priest at Mitori Kannon-do in the countryside of Kumamoto Prefecture. It was truly a solitary forest life (sanrin dokuju); as for quietness it was quiet, as for loneliness it was lonely -- such a life it was." ( 1901 – 1944 ) One of the Finnish poets who brought a free verse style of writing poetry into the mainstream of Finnish literature. Her work is full of the ecstasy of life, longing for distant places, and a use of vocabulary glutted in color, into which are woven a general radical quality, which affects her late works especially. She is considered a late proponent of the ideals of the Carriers of the Flame. Her earlier works show her dedicated to light and its power. Her output is not extensive. Dylan Thomas
Dylan Marlais Thomas was born on October 27, 1914 in Swansea, Glamorganshire (Wales). He was educated at Swansea Grammar School and became well-known for his obscure poetry and amusing plays and prose. Before the publishing of Thomas' first book in 1934, he worked as a reporter for The South Wales Daily Post, in Swansea, (1931-1932) and as a free-lance writer from 1933. "18 Poems", Thomas' first book, was published as the result of a prize. Thomas was only 19 when this volume of poetry was released. He wrote nearly 30 poems in late 1933 and early 1934, of which 13 were published in this volume. Between May and October 1934, he completed another five for inclusion in the book. The Thomas' poems first appeared in the Sunday Referee in 1933 in a feature column called the "Poets' Corner," edited by Victor Neuburg and Runia Sheila MacLeod. Olly Komenda Soentgerath
Olly Komenda Soentgerath was born as German in Prague. She studied Germanistik and History at the Karl University. First poems appeared in the \"Prager day sheet\". In the Federal Republic of Germany she published so far ten poem volumes and a Prosaband. Seifert translated her poems into Czech and published them in three volumes in Prague two years before she received the 1984 Nobelprize. The poems of Olly Komenda Soentgerath were published in numerous anthologies, newspapers and magazines. They were toned and translated into several languages - the authoress is member of the PEN- club.She won several literary awards kept among others being the Culture Prize for Bibliography 1992 endowed by the Free State of Bavaria; the Honour Gift of Andreas Gryphius; and in 1996 the Kuenstlergilde endowed by the Federal Ministry of the Inside.

Raymond Carver
The American short story writer and poet Raymond Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, on May 25, 1938, and lived in Port Angeles, Washington during his last ten, sober years until his death from cancer on August 2, 1988. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1979 and was twice awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1983 Carver received the prestigious Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award which gave him $35,000 per year tax free and required that he give up any employment other than writing, and in 1985 Poetry magazine\'s Levinson Prize. In 1988 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Hartford. John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck (1902-1968), born in Salinas, California, came from a family of moderate means. He worked his way through college at Stanford University but never graduated. In 1925 he went to New York, where he tried for a few years to establish himself as a free-lance writer, but he failed and returned to California. After publishing some novels and short stories, Steinbeck first became widely known with Tortilla Flat (1935), a series of humorous stories about Monterey paisanos. Steinbeck's novels can all be classified as social novels dealing with the economic problems of rural labour, but there is also a streak of worship of the soil in his books, which does not always agree with his matter-of-fact sociological approach.
