Paul Strassburg

Secret Counsellor of the King of Sweden, Gustav the 2nd Adolf Paul Strassburg (1595 – 1654) was born at Nurnberg in 1595, two years after his father, a jurist, settled in the town arriving from Saxony. He acquired an academic degree at Altdorf. For three years he studied Italian and Latin in Italy. While in Prague he joined the protestant uprising in Bohemia, since he was a Calvinist, and he fought at The Battle of White Mountain (1) thus becoming a captain. In 1624 he makes a first trip to Transylvania as diplomatic agent / secret agent trying to persuade the prince of Transylvania Gabriel Bethlen (2) to become a member of the Hague Alliance of the Protestant countries: England, Holland, Denmark and thus to fight against the Habsburg Empire. The prince asked for too much money and nothing was settled. Phaedrus Caius Iulius

Phaedrus, Gaius Julius (c.15 BC—c. AD 50), Thracian slave who came to Rome and became a freedman in the household of Augustus, the author (in Latin) of a collection of fables in five books containing some hundred stories, published probably in the thirties of the first century AD. There is also an appendix of another thirty-two fables, probably also by Phaedrus. The collection includes fables proper, a number of anecdotes (e.g. about Aesop, Socrates, and Menander), and defences of the author against detractors. The fables are based on those of Aesop and on beast-stories from other sources which had come to be attributed to Aesop. They are written in verse, in iambic senarii (see METRE, LATIN 2), and their object is two-fold, to give advice and to entertain. They are generally serious or satirical, dealing with the injustices of life and social and political evils, but occasionally they are light and amusing. In general they express patient resignation. Alexandru A. Philippide

2 martie 1900 se naste, la Iasi, Alexandru A. Philippide, fiul lui Alexandru I. Philippide (filolog cu renume și academician) si al Lucretiei. Debuteaza in revista " Insemnari Literare" cu poemul "Cintecul citorva". Un an mai tarziu debuteaza in proza. In 1922 apare volumul de poezii " Aur sterp" care include si poezia de debut. In 1942 vede lumina tiparului singurul volum de proza al scriitorului " Floarea din prapastie". Traduce in limba romana nume sonore ca Voltaire,Cehov si Novalis despre care spune "Am pastrat o dragoste statornica lui Novalis, iar romantismul german e pentru mine o gradina interioara a carei cheie intotdeauna ma voi feri s-o pierd". 1930 - 1945 colaborator la " Adevarul Literar si Artistic", " Viata Romaneasca", "Cuvantul Liber", "Gandirea", "Vremea", "Revista Fundatiilor" iar din 1945 si la "Victoria". Primeste Premiul de Stat pentru versiunea Romana a poemelor lui Lermontov. In 1968 apare volumul de eseuri " Scriitorul si arta lui" cu o prefata a autorului....
