Crawling over the horizon
in sleepy steps,
a painter, spilling heedlessly
drops of colour here and there,
then soaking all the land
in rose and red and orange;
his shadow pushing impatiently
over the image an angry hand,
smudging, greying artistic genius,
jealous, fighting for attention,
racing alongside,
always one step behind,
fading in the limelight –
forced to leave the stage
at the arrival of the black knight,
in his arms the dying day
