FAFleur Adcock
Poet Fleur Adcock was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 10 February 1934, but spent much of her childhood, including the war years, in England. She studied Classics at Victoria University in Wellington and taught at the University of Otago, moving to London in 1963 where she worked as a librarian at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. She has held various literary fellowships, including a period at the Charlotte Mason College of Education, Ambleside (1977-78). Later she held the Northern Arts Fellowship at the Universities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Durham (1979-81), where she met the composer Gillian Whitehead with whom she collaborated on a song cycle libretto and later a full-length opera about Eleanor of Aquitaine. In 1984 she was Writing Fellow at the University of East Anglia. She has been writing full-time since 1981. Wendy Cope is an award-winning contemporary English poet. She was educated at Farringtons School and read history at St Hilda\'s College, Oxford. She now lives in Winchester with the poet Lachlan Mackinnon. Following her graduation from St Hilda\'s College, Cope spent fifteen years as a primary-school teacher. In 1981 she became Arts and Reviews editor for the Inner London Education Authority magazine- Contact. Five years later she became a freelance writer and was a television critic for The Spectator magazine until 1990. Three books of her poetry have been published (Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis in 1986, Serious Concerns in 1992 and If I Don\'t Know in 2001), and she has edited several anthologies of comic verse. MacDonald was the grandson of the writer George MacDonald and son of the author Ronald MacDonald and the actress Constance Robertson. Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812 in Camberwell, which is south of London. His birthday falls within a couple of months of the births of Dickens and Thackeray.
