Carson, Rachel Louise (1907-1964) Biologist, Writer: Born on May 27, 1907 in western Pennsylvania, Carson became interested in wildlife as a child. An avid reader and eager writer, she wrote poetry while studying zoology at the Pennsylvania College for Women and Johns Hopkins. During the summers, she studied at the Woods Hole Marine Biological laboratory, and went on to teach at Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland. In 1935, Carson\'s father died, and she began working as an aquatic biologist for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, later called the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Meanwhile, she wrote scripts called \"Seven Minute Fish Tales\" for a radio series. In 1961, Carson published The Sea Around Us, for which she won the National Book Award. In addition, a documentary made from the book won an Academy Award. Anthony McCann is an American poet. He is the author of two collections of poetry, including Father of Noise, and Moongarden. He is also the author of Gentle Reader!, a book of erasures of the English Romantics, written with fellow poets Joshua Beckman and Matthew Rohrer. Robert Silverberg (born January 15, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY) is a prolific author best known for writing science fiction, a multiple winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. Silverberg, a voracious reader from childhood on, began submitting stories to the science fiction magazines in his early teenage years. He attended Columbia University, receiving an A.B. in English Literature in 1956, but he kept writing science fiction. His first published novel, a children's book called Revolt on Alpha C appeared in 1955, and in the following year, he won his first Hugo, as "best new writer." For the next four years, by his own count, he wrote a million words a year, for magazines and Ace Doubles. Abdul Alhazred is a fictional character created by American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. He is the so-called "Mad Arab" credited with authoring the imaginary book Kitab al-Azif (the Necronomicon), and as such an integral part of Cthulhu Mythos lore. Despite the existence of several hoax Necronomicons, it is clear that neither Alhazred nor his book ever existed. The name Abdul Alhazred is a pseudonym that Lovecraft created in his youth, which he took on after reading 1001 Arabian Nights at the age of about five years. The name was invented either by Lovecraft, or by Albert Baker, the Phillips family lawyer. Abdul is a common Arabic name component (but never a name by itself; additionally the ending -ul and the beginning Al- are redundant), but Alhazred may allude to Hazard, a name from Lovecraft's family tree.
