Robert Louis StevensonRS

Robert Louis Stevenson

AutorClasic

13 noiembrie 1850 - 3 decembrie 1894 Robert Louis Stevenson was born to Thomas and Margaret Isabella Balfour Stevenson in Edinburgh on 13 November 1850. From the beginning he was sickly. Through much of his childhood he was attended by his faithful nurse, Alison Cunningham, known as Cummy in the family circle. She told him morbid stories about the Covenanters (the Scots Presbyterian martyrs), read aloud to him Victorian penny-serial novels, Bible stories, and the Psalms, and drilled the catechism into him, all with his parents' approval. Thomas Stevenson was quite a storyteller himself, and his wife doted on their only child, sitting in admiration while her precocious son expounded on religious dogma. Stevenson inevitably reacted to the morbidity of his religious education and to the stiffness of his family's middle-class values, but that rebellion would come only after he entered Edinburgh University.

Murilo MendezMM

Murilo Mendez

AutorClasic

*** Murilo Mendes (born May 13, 1901 in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, - died in Lisbon on August 13, 1975) was an exponent of Modernist poetry in Brazil. He lived in Europe twice and died in Lisbon. His greatest connection in Europe though was to Rome. He converted to Catholicism in 1934 and much of his works deal with tensions arising from his faith. Fernand Dumont

AutorClasic

S-a născut la Montmorency, Canada, în anul 1921. A fost profesor de științe sociale la Universitatea din Laval. Poeziile sale au un vers dens, viguros, în căutarea unei etici noi, față de impasurile omului modern. A publicat volumul Îngerul dimineții (1952) *** Fernand Dumont, sociologist, philosopher, theologian and poet (b at Montmorency, Que., June 24, 1927; d at Québec, May 1, 1997). Dumont is considered one of the most prominent intellectuals Quebec has ever produced. An interdisciplinary scholar concerned with the fate of culture and the place of humanity in modern society, he successfully reconciled the dissimilar forces driving his efforts as a teacher striving to impart knowledge; as a researcher seeking to build a consistent, diversified body of work; as a leading scientist aware of the importance of collaboration; and as an intellectual committed to earthly politics while bearing witness to his Christian faith. Born to a working-class family of modest means, he never forgot...

When he was still an undergraduate, in 1900, his long review of Ibsen’s last play was published in the Fortnightly Review.
