This skillful and cultured poet brought the adventures of Renart the Fox, known previously only in Latin, to a wider, French-speaking public. The two earliest branches of the Roman de Renart, II and Va (ca. 1174–77), which relate the love affair of Renart and Hersent the she-wolf, are attributed to him. Though he imitated Ysengrimus for three episodes (“Renart and Chantecler,” “Renart and the Titmouse,” “Renart and Hersent”) and Marie de France for another (“The Fox and the Crow”), “Renart and Tibert the Cat” is his own invention. He pokes fun at the legal system, pontifical legates and certain religious institutions, princes and nobles, through a subtle parody, intended largely to evoke laughter, of the chansons de geste and Arthurian romance. He was read and imitated by French and foreign authors of beast epics, such as Jacquemart Gielée, Heinrich der Glîchezâre, and Chaucer), by fabulists and writers of exempla (Eudes de Cheriton, Nicole Bozon, Jacques de Vitry), and by Philippe de...

He came out as gay in Nothing Not Giving Messages: Reflections on his Work and Life , but explored his sexuality in many previous works.[1] He had written many famous love poems, among them "Strawberries" and "The Unspoken", in which the love object was not gendered; this was partly because of legal problems at...

Inspiration Inspiration Sit down she said, pen me a few lines, tell me of life, love, hopes and dreams. write to me of much happier times When love ruled your heart, and life it seemed Was full of possibilities, plans and endless schemes. I took up the challenge, and began to write, Of life, of love and hopes and dreams, Words flowed like rivers, as I wrote them down, Thinking all the while of the lady I'd found To inspire my thoughts, and urge me on, To make something beautiful, maybe a song. Into the small hours, I toiled away, writing down lines, throwing them away. 'Twas then that I realised, that the happier times That she spoke of and wanted, were not of that time. For the happier times were not from long ago, But were here with me now, and now I know, That 'twas the love for this lady, that made my words flow, And to write something beautiful, for her, her alone. I wrote of life, and my living with her, Of love, her in my arms forever more, Of hopes, a future for us so bright,...

T.S. Eliot
Thomas Stearns Eliot, OM (26 September 1888–4 January 1965), was a poet, playwright and literary critic. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Among his most famous writings are the poems The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, The Hollow Men, Ash Wednesday and Four Quartets; the plays Murder in the Cathedral and The Cocktail Party; and the essay "Tradition and the Individual Talent". Of his nationality and its role in his work, Eliot said: "[My poetry] wouldn't be what it is if I'd been born in England, and it wouldn't be what it is if I'd stayed in America. It's a combination of things. But in its sources, in its emotional springs, it comes from America."
