LDLouis Dudek
Louis Dudek, OC (February 6, 1918 – March 23, 2001) was a Canadian poet and literary critic and publisher of Polish origin. He is known for his writing, his role in defining Modernism in poetry, and his literary criticism. He was the author of over two dozen books of poetry, criticism, and other topics. He supported and initially published many poets, including other now-established writers including Daryl Hyne and Ken Norris. Born in Montreal, Quebec to a Catholic family which had emigrated from Poland, Dudek received a BA from McGill University in 1939. He joined the Department of English of McGill University in 1951, where he lectured in modern poetry. Dudek remained at McGill for the rest of his life. He founded Contact Press, a Montreal publisher of poetry in the 1950s and 1960s, with Raymond Souster and Irving Layton. Félix Leclerc, OC GOQ (August 2, 1914 – August 8, 1988) was a French-Canadian folk singer, poet, writer, actor and Québécois political activist. He was born in La Tuque, Quebec, Canada from a family of pioneers in 1914, sixth in a family of eleven children. He began his studies at the University of Ottawa but was forced to stop due to the Great Depression. Leclerc worked at several jobs before taking jobs as a radio announcer in Quebec City and Trois-Rivières from 1934 to 1937. In 1939, he began working as a writer at Radio-Canada in Montreal, developing scripts for radio dramas, including Je me souviens. He performed some of his earliest songs there. He also acted in various dramas, including Un Homme et son péché. He published a number of his scripts and founded a performing company which presented his plays through Quebec. Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, author, and poet, renowned today primarily for his literary nonsense, in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form that he popularised. Lear was born into a middle-class family in the village of Holloway, the 21st child of Ann and Jeremiah Lear. He was raised by his eldest sister, also named Ann, 21 years his senior. Ann doted on Lear and continued to mother him until her death, when Lear was almost 50 years of age. Due to the family's failing financial fortune, at age four he and his sister had to leave the family home and set up house together. Nicanor Parra Sandoval (born in San Fabián de Alico, Chile on September 5, 1914) is a mathematician and poet often considered to be the most influential poet Chile has produced since Pablo Neruda.[citation needed] He describes himself as an "antipoet," due to his distaste for standard poetic pomp and function (after recitations he would exclaim Me retracto de todo lo dicho, or, "I take back everything I said"). Trying to get away from the conventions of poetry, Parra's poetic language renounces the refinement of most Latin American literature and adopts a more colloquial tone similar to prose. Inga Vivienne Clendinnen AO (born 17 August 1934) is an Australian author and historian, anthropologist and academic. Born in Geelong, Victoria, Clendinnen graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1955 with a BA (Hons). She sporadically held the post of Senior Tutor of History there from 1955 to 1968, was a Lecturer at La Trobe University from 1969 to 1982, and was then a Senior Lecturer in History until 1989. Forced to curtail her academic activities due to contracting hepatitis, Clendinnen retained an association with La Trobe University while working on her memoir, Tiger's Eye. Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812 in Camberwell, which is south of London. His birthday falls within a couple of months of the births of Dickens and Thackeray.
