Andrew Hudgins was born in Killeen, Texas, in 1951 and educated at Huntingdon College and the University of Alabama. He earned his M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in 1983. His volumes of poetry include Ecstatic in the Poison (Overlook Press, 2003); Babylon in a Jar (1998); The Glass Hammer: A Southern Childhood (1994); The Never-Ending: New Poems (1991),a finalist for the National Book Awards; After the Lost War: A Narrative (1988), which received the Poetry Prize; and Saints and Strangers (1985), which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is also the author of a book of essays, The Glass Anvil (1997). Born Frederick Ogden Nash on August 19, 1902 in Rye, New York. An ancestor, General Francis Nash, gave his name to Nashville, Tennesee. Raised in Rye, New York and Savannah, Georgia. Educated at St. George's School in Rhode Island and, briefly, Harvard University. Started work writing advertising copy for Doubleday, Page Publishing, New York, in 1925. Published first book for children, The Cricket of Caradon in 1925. First published poem Spring Comes to Murray Hill appears in New Yorker magazine in 1930. Joins staff at New Yorker in 1932. Married Frances Rider Leonard on June 6, 1933. Published 19 books of poetry. Collaborated, in 1943, in the musical comedy, "One Touch of Venus." He is especially well-known for his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories, such as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. Sunt un om cactus. Am flori frumoase, dar înțep. În spini îmi ascund durerea. Mi-au crescut în timp ce încercam să mă adaptez condițiilor de mediu, din teamă, dezamăgiri și incertitudini. Au crescut fără să fac vreun efort. M-am culcat îngrijorat într-o seară, iar dimineața, când m-am trezit, înțepam pe toată lumea. Atât de tare încât nimeni nu mai observa florile. Mă apăram doar. Dacă te doare să mă ții în brațe, așează-mă într-o vază, undeva, pe masa din sufragerie și în fiecare dimineață, când te trezești, privește ce frumoase sunt florile mele. Florile din suflet.
