They seemed to have existed for a long time in the perimeter of my awareness, undifferentiated from proverbs, mottoes, aphorisms, and song lyrics that were phrased in similar forms. Sometime during my grade school years, \"Ogura Hyakunin-Isshu\" (\"Ogura Collection of One Hundred Tanka\", edited by Teika Fujiwara around 1235) became known to me as a New Year\'s card game, in which players compete to capture shimonoku cards (100 cards on each of which the last half of a verse is printed, spread out on the floor in front of the players) that finish the verses being read aloud. At abacus school, where we played this game at every new year\'s party, my prowess in the game improved dramatically when I was in the sixth grade, after I had memorized all the poems with my tenth-grade sister who was required to do so in her archaic grammar course in school. Scriitor latin, de origine siriană. Autor de mimi (farse), care abundau în maxime morale (sententiae) foarte apreciate atât de contemporanii săi, cât și de posteritate. Engleză Publilius (less correctly Publius) Syrus, a Latin writer of maxims, flourished in the 1st century BC. He was a Syrian who was brought as a slave to Italy, but by his wit and talent he won the favor of his master, who freed and educated him. His mimes, in which he acted himself, had a great success in the provincial towns of Italy and at the games given by Caesar in 46 BC. Publilius was perhaps even more famous as an improviser, and received from Caesar himself the prize in a contest in which he vanquished all his competitors, including the celebrated Decimus Laberius. All that remains of his works is a collection of Sentences (Sententiae), a series of moral maxims in iambic and trochaic verse. This collection must have been made at a very early date, since it was known to Aulus Gellius in the 2nd century AD....

Orson Scott Card (n. 24 august 1951) este un scriitor cunoscut mai ales pentru romanul Jocul lui Ender (Ender\'s Game), publicat în 1985. Este actualmente profesor la Southern Virginia University în Buena Vista, Virginia. VIAȚA: Card s-a născut în Richland, Washington, a terminat Brigham Young University și University of Utah. In momentul de față el trăiește in Greensboro, Carolina de Nord, cu soția lui Kristine. Leonard Cohen (n. 1934, Montreal) este un poet, cântăreț și romancier evreu canadian Și-a făcut studiile la universitățile McGill și Columbia. A debutat în 1956 cu volumul de versuri Să comparăm mitologii dar faima i-a adus-o cel de-al doilea ciclu, The Spice Box of Earth (Cutia cu mirodenii a planetei). Cohen a călătorit prin Europa și s-a stabilit în insula grecească Hydra, unde a locuit timp de 7 ani alături de soția sa Marriane Jensen și de fiul lor, Axel. În Grecia a scris mai multe volume, controversatul volum de versuri Flowers For Hitler (1964) precum și două romane, The Favorite Game(Jocul favorit, Polirom, 2003) (1963), și Beautiful Losers(Frumoșii învinși, Polirom, 2004) (1966). La publicarea lor, ziarul Boston Globe declara, "James Joyce nu a murit. Trăiește în Montreal și se numește Cohen." Ele s-au vândut în 800.000 de exemplare în lumea întreagă. James Dennis "Jim" Carroll (August 1, 1949 – September 11, 2009) was an author, poet, autobiographer, and punk musician. Carroll was best known for his 1978 autobiographical work The Basketball Diaries, which was made into the 1995 film of the same name, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Carroll. Carroll was of Irish descent and attended Roman Catholic grammar schools from 1955 to 1963. In fall 1963, he entered public school, but was soon awarded a scholarship to the elite private school Trinity School (New York). He entered Trinity High School in 1964. Apart from being interested in writing, Carroll was an all-star basketball player throughout his grade school and high school career.
