Li Po
Li Po was born in central Asia. After his father moved the family back into China in 705, he started his poetic compositions. With mountains near his house, he found adventure and became a skilled swordsman and led a life of a knight-errant when he was older. Po traveled and married a daughter of a retired prime minister in 727, but soon went back to traveling the regions and neighboring countries around him. His most exciting travels were to the capital Ch’ang-an where he was presented to the emperor Hsuan-tsung and was showered with extravagant gifts. He was then appointed as a member of the Hanlin Academy and was lionized by fellow scholar-officials. The next travel he experienced was in 744. By this time he was divorced from his first wife and remarried. He was also becoming a drunk and visiting city taverns. Soon Po became known as one of the “Eight Immortals of the Wine-Cup”. PGPhyllis Gotlieb
Phyllis Gotlieb, born in Toronto on May 25, 1926, to parents who owned a movie theatre, received her B.A. (1948) and M.A. (1950) from the University of Toronto. She published five volumes of poetry from 1964 to 2002, one of them nominated for a Governor General's Award. In 1964 she published the first of nine novels of science fiction, Sunburst, after which the Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic is named. Three sf series followed: the Dahlgren, 1976-89 (O Master Caliban! and Heart of Red Iron), the Ungrukh or Starcats, 1980-85 (A Judgment Of Dragons, Emperor, Swords and Pentacles, The Kingdom of Cats), and the GalFed, 1998-2002 (Flesh and Gold, Violent Stars, Mindworld). A Judgment Of Dragons won the Aurora award in 1982. She has also published a mainstream novel, Why Should I Have all the Grief (1969), and two volumes of short stories, notably Blue Apes (1995). KTKi No Tsurayuki
Poet (waka) japonez din era Heian. A trăit (probabil) între anii 872 și 945. *** Ki no Tsurayuki (872-945) was a Japanese author, poet and courtier of the Heian period. Tsurayuki was a son of Ki no Mochiyuki. He became a waka poet in the 890s. In 905, under the order of Emperor Daigo, he was one of four poets selected to compile the Kokin Wakashū, an anthology of poetry. After holding a few offices in Kyoto, he was appointed the provincial governor of Tosa province and stayed there from 930 until 935. Later he was presumably appointed the provincial governor of Suo province, since it was recorded that he held a waka party (Utaai) at his home in Suo. He is well-known for his waka and is counted as one of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals selected by Fujiwara no Kinto. He was also known as one of the editors of the Kokin Wakashū.
