During his lifetime, Descartes was just as famous as an original physicist, physiologist and mathematician. But it is as a highly original philosopher that he is most frequently read today. He attempted to restart philosophy in a fresh direction. Francisco de Rioja (Sevilla, 1583 - Madrid, 1659), poeta y erudito español del Barroco. Se licenció en leyes, se ordenó y fue canónigo de la catedral de Sevilla; fue renombrado teólogo y jurista, y amigo y protegido del Conde de Sanlúcar y Duque de Olivares don Gaspar de Guzmán, a cuyo servicio entró desde 1624; a su caída le acompañó al destierro en Loeches primero, y después en Toro. Fallecido el Conde-Duque, se retiró a Sevilla cansado y desengañado de las fortunas de la Corte. El Cabildo sevillano le designó entonces agente suyo en Madrid (1654), con cuyo cometido tuvo que volver a residir en la capital, y allí murió el 28 de agosto de 1659. Secret Counsellor of the King of Sweden, Gustav the 2nd Adolf Paul Strassburg (1595 – 1654) was born at Nurnberg in 1595, two years after his father, a jurist, settled in the town arriving from Saxony. He acquired an academic degree at Altdorf. For three years he studied Italian and Latin in Italy. While in Prague he joined the protestant uprising in Bohemia, since he was a Calvinist, and he fought at The Battle of White Mountain (1) thus becoming a captain. In 1624 he makes a first trip to Transylvania as diplomatic agent / secret agent trying to persuade the prince of Transylvania Gabriel Bethlen (2) to become a member of the Hague Alliance of the Protestant countries: England, Holland, Denmark and thus to fight against the Habsburg Empire. Por la importancia de su obra, recibió los sobrenombres de El Fénix de América y La décima Musa.

PQPedro de Quirós
(Sevilla, hacia 1590 - Madrid, 1667) Pedro de Quirós, poeta español. Profesó en el convento de Clérigos Menores de dicha ciudad hacia 1624. En 1659 fue nombrado propósito del colegio de su orden en Salamanca y reelegido en 1665, pero el mismo año pasó a ser visitador general de la provincia de España. Escribió versos latinos y castellanos. Su obra poética se conserva en el manuscrito Poesías divinas y humanas, que contiene sonetos, canciones sacras, romances, madrigales y una excelente Égloga al Nacimiento de Cristo. Su soneto A Itálica y el madrigal Tórtola amante fueron publicados por primera vez por Amador de los Ríos en 1838, y desde entonces aparecen en todas las antologías. En sus versos utilizó un lenguaje popular enriquecido por un cierto conceptismo.

An emissary of the Queen Christina of Sweden to the khan of the Tartars Islam Giray the 3rd, Iohann Mayer made a journey through Moldavia during May 1651. He was sent to accompany the Tartar messenger who had brought to the queen the letter of the khan that contained proposals of common operation against Poland and he was to hand over to the khan the answer of the queen as well. He passed through The White Citadel for the first time in December 1650 on his way towards Crimea. Now, in the summer of the next year, he was coming back on the same route and was finding again the same boatmen he had used six months earlier, on leaving. One cannot be aware of any other details of his winter journey towards Crimea, no other details about his itinerary through Moldavia he is most likely to have used to make his way to the khan` s court. François L'Hermite, sieur du Soliers, dit Tristan L'Hermite, né à Janaillat (Creuse) au château de Soliers, dans la Marche, 1601 et mort à Paris le 7 septembre 1655, est un poète et dramaturge français. Auteur dramatique fort applaudi en son temps, et dont la première pièce, la fameuse tragédie de Mariane (printemps 1636), surpassa le succès de Médée et contrebalança celui du Cid (décembre 1636).
