Samuel Taylor "Estese" Coleridge (1772-1834) Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born in Ottery St. Mary on 21 October 1772, youngest of the ten children of John Coleridge, a minister, and Ann Bowden Coleridge. He was often bullied as a child by Frank, the next youngest, and his mother was apparently a bit distant, so it was no surprise when Col1 ran away at age seven. He was found early the next morning by a neighbor, but the events of his night outdoors frequently showed up in imagery in his poems (and his nightmares) as well as the notebooks he kept for most of his adult life. John Coleridge died in 1781, and Col was sent away to a London charity school for children of the clergy. He stayed with his maternal uncle2. Col was really quite a prodigy; he devoured books and eventually earned first place in his class. His brother Luke died in 1790 and his only sister Ann in 1791, inspiring Col to write "Monody," one of his first poems, in which he likens himself to Thomas Chatterton3. Col was...

Kamo no Chomei- poet, critic și eseist de origine japoneză- a trăit în perioada de tranziție de le epoca Heian la peioada Kamakura. S-a născut într-o familie de preoți șintoiști, în Kyoto. Și-a început cariera de poet la curtea imperială. A fost numit de împăratul Go-Toba membru al Inaltului Birou de Poezie (Wakadoro), unde a excelat ca estetician și critic literar. In anul 1204 a devenit preot budist și s-a retras în muntele Ohara, iar în 1208 s-a mutat în muntele Hino (lângă Uji, la sud de Kyoto). Chomei și-a definit idealul de pustnic în lucrarea sa “Hojoki” (Insemnări din coliba mea, 1212), un “zuihitsu” (însemnări la întâmplare) care a devenit lucrare de referință în literatura japoneză. Opere: se remarcă în antologia Shin Kokinshu și în alte antologii imperiale Culegerea de versuri Kamo no Chomei Shu (1181) Mumyosho (Insemnări fără căpătâi, 1211) Hojoki (Insemnări din coliba mea, 1212)

Fujiwara no Teika (1169-1241) Fiul lui Fujiwara no Skunzei, Teika a fost cel mai mare literat al vremii sale. Poet cu un florilegiu propriu, critic literar de mare prestigiu, prozator și autorul câtorva antologii celebre: -Shinkokinshu (Nouă culegere de poezii din trecut și de azi) întocmită în 1201-1206 împreună cu alții, la îndemnul fostului împărat Go-Toba, -Shinchokusenshu (Nouă culegere imperială), la cererea fostului împărat Go-Horikawa, terminată în 1234, pentru care a scris și o prefață japoneză; -Kindai Shuka (Cele mai bune poezii ale vremii noastre), o selecție de 83 tanka ș. a. A ocupat funcții înalte la curte făcând parte din juriul multor concursuri imperiale.
