Detachment

Away from you, soles aching,

seeking distance and walking

further away fast –

Those “ What you should have done,

and I did not say”, have become

cobwebs of the past;

running at full speed,

remorse gnawing at my feet

kicking me until I crawl,

still riding the tide

of self-pity and pride,

bitterness and revenge call

me again to heal

my wounds and make me feel

angry and small

yet the bond is stretched too far,

its fibres are dry and hard

while I hurry on

towards detaching the chord

until you don’t matter any more,

when the autumn winds’ song

softly stirs and wakes

the last leaves; the bond breaks -

finally
