Between Yesterday and Today

I stand between yesterday and today,
like a shadow unsure of where to go.
I left my dreams hanging on the edge of night,
I left my hopes in a corner of a grey sky.
I search for myself in the small things,
in the smiles I hid, afraid
they'd be shattered.
I search for myself in the lost days,
in the seconds when time stopped and I breathed.
I'm still waiting for an answer
from my weary heart.
I still hope that one day
I'll look in the mirror and recognize myself.
But until then,
I carry my memories like a coat too heavy,
I dress in unspoken words,
and I learn to be.
