T.S. Eliot

Thomas Stearns Eliot, OM (26 September 1888–4 January 1965), was a poet, playwright and literary critic. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Among his most famous writings are the poems The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, The Hollow Men, Ash Wednesday and Four Quartets; the plays Murder in the Cathedral and The Cocktail Party; and the essay "Tradition and the Individual Talent". Eliot was born in the United States, moved to the United Kingdom in 1914 (at age 25), and became a British subject in 1927 at the age of 39. Of his nationality and its role in his work, Eliot said: "[My poetry] wouldn't be what it is if I'd been born in England, and it wouldn't be what it is if I'd stayed in America. It's a combination of things. But in its sources, in its emotional springs, it comes from America."

S-a născut în St.Louis, Missouri și a fost mezinul răsfățat al unei familii cu 7 copii. Mama sa, profesoară și poetă aspirantă, este cea care îi face cunoștința cu poezia. În 1910, Eliot își încheie studiile de filozofie la Harvard, deși frecventează cursurile numai selectiv. Petrece un an la Paris unde scrie Cântecul lui Alfred Prufrock, poemul care îi aduce consacrarea. Aici va frecventa cursurile universității din Sorbona, iar în Anglia va studia și la Oxford. În 1914, pleacă în Anglia cu o bursă de studii. O întâlnește aici pe Vivienne Haigh-Wood, guvernantă, dansatoare și morfinomană. În ciuda protestelor familiei, Eliot se căsătorește cu ea. După moartea tatălui său, în 1919, suferă o cădere nervoasă. În timpul recuperării scrie poemul Țara pustie, devenit simbolul generației postbelice, generație deziluzionată și debusolată, și totodată piatră de temelie a poeziei...

1716–71, English poet. He was educated at Eton and Peterhouse, Cambridge. In 1739 he began a grand tour of the Continent with Horace Walpole. They quarreled in Italy, and Gray returned to England in 1741. He continued his studies at Cambridge, and he remained there for most of his life, living in seclusion, studying Greek, and writing. In 1768 he was made professor of history and modern languages, but he did no real teaching. Although he was reconciled with Walpole, and formed other close relationships in his lifetime, his shy and sensitive disposition was ill adapted to the robust century in which he lived. Dylan Thomas

Dylan Marlais Thomas was born on October 27, 1914 in Swansea, Glamorganshire (Wales). He was educated at Swansea Grammar School and became well-known for his obscure poetry and amusing plays and prose. Before the publishing of Thomas' first book in 1934, he worked as a reporter for The South Wales Daily Post, in Swansea, (1931-1932) and as a free-lance writer from 1933. "18 Poems", Thomas' first book, was published as the result of a prize. Thomas was only 19 when this volume of poetry was released. He wrote nearly 30 poems in late 1933 and early 1934, of which 13 were published in this volume. Between May and October 1934, he completed another five for inclusion in the book. The Thomas' poems first appeared in the Sunday Referee in 1933 in a feature column called the "Poets' Corner," edited by Victor Neuburg and Runia Sheila MacLeod.
