Raymond Thornton Chandler (23 iulie, 1888 – 26 martie, 1959) a fost un scriitor american de romane polițiste și nuvele. Sa născut la Chicago în 1888.Are șapte ani când tatăl său, un american, o părăsește pe mama lui Raymond. Aceasta, o irlandeză, se întoarce împreună cu copilul în Anglia. Raymond Chandler revine în Statele Unite în 1912, stabilindu-se pe Coasta de Vest. Fermecător, spiritual, înzestrat pentru stiințe, Chandler își găsește de lucru ușor. La un moment dat, ocupă un post important într-o companie petrolieră. Participă la primul război mondial, luptând în Franța. Se căsătorește cu Cissy Pascal, o femeie cu 18 ani mai în vârstă decât el. Elizabeth Kim was born in Korea. Omma was killed by her brother and father ('honour killing') for the sin of sleeping with an American soldier and producing a mixed-race child, Elizabeth. There is no record of her birth or of her name. Dumped in a horrific orphanage in post-war Seoul, Kim was lucky to be adopted by a fundamentalist American family. But just as her American features doomed her in racist Korea, her Korean features served as a constant reminder that she wasn't good enough for her new all-white environment. Her mother had always told her that life was made up of ten thousand joys as well as ten thousand sorrows.

Poetul, romancierul și scenaristul Kenneth Jay Koch s-a născut la 27 februarie 1925 în Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. După ce își face stagiul militar, în 1943, își începe studiile la Universitatea Harward, continuându-le la Columbia University. Timp de trei ani e rezident în Franța și Italia. Born to middle class parents in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, Sylvia Plath published her first poem when she was eight. Sensitive, intelligent, compelled toward perfection in everything she attempted, she was, on the surface, a model daughter, popular in school, earning straight A\'s, winning the best prizes. By the time she entered Smith College on a scholarship in 1950 she already had an impressive list of publications, and while at Smith she wrote over four hundred poems. Sylvia\'s surface perfection was however underlain by grave personal discontinuities, some of which doubtless had their origin in the death of her father (he was a college professor and an expert on bees) when she was eight.
