Lou Andreas-Salomé (née Louise von Salomé) (February 12, 1861 in St. Petersburg – January 5, 1937 in Göttingen) was a Russian-born psychoanalyst and author. Her diverse intellectual interests led to friendships with a broad array of distinguished western luminaries, including Nietzsche, Wagner, Freud, and Rilke. Lou Salomé ( born Luíza Gustavovna Salomé - Луиза Густавовна Саломе) was born in St. Petersburg to an army general and his wife. Salomé was their only daughter; she had five brothers. Although she would later be attacked by the Nazis as a "Finnish Jewess," her parents were actually of French Huguenot and Northern German descent. Gorky himself grew up in rough times and was a lifelong spokesperson for the underclass. His political activism led to several years of exile, in spite of his popularity with Russian readers. By 1900 Gorky was a famous literary figure, thanks in part to help from Anton Chekhov. His short stories and his first novel, Foma Gordeyev (1902) gave him notoriety as well as critical success, but his outspoken opposition to the rule of Nicholas II led to his exile to the island of Capri (1907-13). After the 1917 revolution Gorky's criticism of his friend V. I. Lenin and the Bolsheviks led to another...

William Butler YeatsWY

William Butler Yeats

AutorClasic

The Irish poet and dramatist William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was the leader of the Irish Literary Renaissance during the early 20th century. Yeats\'s early lyrical poetry and drama drew inspiration from Irish legend and occult learning, but his later writing became increasingly engaged with his own time. W. B. Yeats, b. Dublin, June 13, 1865, d. Jan. 28, 1939, was perhaps the greatest English-language poet of the 20th century. The major defining elements of Yeats\'s poetic career were visible by his 24th year. He had formed a profound attachment to the county of Sligo, where he stayed for long periods while living in London (1867-83); his interest in the occult led him to found (1885) the Dublin Hermetic Society and to join (1887) the London Lodge of Theosophists; his 1885 meeting with the nationalist John O\'Leary prompted his discovery of Ireland as a literary subject and his commitment to the cause of Irish national identity; in 1889 he fell in love with Maud Gonne and published...

In 1909, Varnalis was appointed to a teaching post in Greece. He received a scholarship in 1919 for post-graduate studies in Paris, France. The two years he spent in France changed him radically as a person: Varnalis was deeply moved by the suffering of common people during World War I and greatly influenced by the October Revolution in Russia. He returned to Greece and acquired the label "leftist" which led to dismissal from his teaching post during the Pangalos dictatorship in 1925....

However, with the death of his father and the increasing financial struggles his family experienced thereafter, Silva was forced to return to Colombia. Incapable of paying his family's enormous debts, Silva accepted a diplomatic position in Caracas. While there, he was encouraged by fellow writers to pursue his poetry. In 1895,...

Li Po

AutorClasic

Li Po was born in central Asia. After his father moved the family back into China in 705, he started his poetic compositions. With mountains near his house, he found adventure and became a skilled swordsman and led a life of a knight-errant when he was older. Po traveled and married a daughter of a retired prime minister in 727, but soon went back to traveling the regions and neighboring countries around him. His most exciting travels were to the capital Ch’ang-an where he was presented to the emperor Hsuan-tsung and was showered with extravagant gifts. He was then appointed as a member of the Hanlin Academy and was lionized by fellow scholar-officials. The next travel he experienced was in 744. By this time he was divorced from his first wife and remarried. He was also becoming a drunk and visiting city taverns. Soon Po became known as one of the “Eight Immortals of the Wine-Cup”. During this year he was initiated in the Taoist religion along with his friend Tu Fu. After 10 years of...

Christina Rossetti

AutorClasic

Christina Georgina Rossetti, one of the most important women poets writing in nineteenth-century England, was born in London December 5, 1830, to Gabriele and Frances (Polidori) Rossetti. Although her fundamentally religious temperament was closer to her mother\'s, this youngest member of a remarkable family of poets, artists, and critics inherited many of her artistic tendencies from her father. Judging from somewhat idealized sketches made by her brother Dante, Christina as a teenager seems to have been quite attractive if not beautiful. In 1848 she became engaged to James Collinson, one of the minor Pre-Raphaelite brethren, but the engagement ended after he reverted to Roman Catholicism. When Professor Rossetti\'s failing health and eyesight forced him into retirement in 1853, Christina and her mother attempted to support the family by starting a day school, but had to give it up after a year or so. Thereafter she led a very retiring life, interrupted by a recurring illness which...
