William J. ("Billy") Collins (born March 22, 1941) is an American poet who served two terms as the 44th Poet Laureate of the United States, from 2001 to 2003. In his home state, Collins has been recognized as a Literary Lion of the New York Public Library (1992) and selected as the New York State Poet for 2004. He was recently appointed Claire Berman Artist in Residence at The Roxbury Latin School, in West Roxbury, MA. He is a distinguished professor at Lehman College of the City University of New York. Carson, Rachel Louise (1907-1964) Biologist, Writer: Born on May 27, 1907 in western Pennsylvania, Carson became interested in wildlife as a child. An avid reader and eager writer, she wrote poetry while studying zoology at the Pennsylvania College for Women and Johns Hopkins. During the summers, she studied at the Woods Hole Marine Biological laboratory, and went on to teach at Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland. In 1935, Carson\'s father died, and she began working as an aquatic biologist for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, later called the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In the 1970s, Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate, lowlife characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle, which he sang about in a raspy, gravelly voice. Yevgeny Yevtushenko Best known poet of the post-Stalin generation of Russian poets, Yevtushenko\'s early poems show the influence of Mayakovsky and loyalty to communism, but with such works as The Third Snow (1955) Yevtushenko become a spokesman for the young post-Stalin generation and travelled abroad widely throughout the Khrushchev and the Brezhnev periods.
