Anvari (1126–1189), full name Awhad ad-Din 'Ali ibn Mohammad Khavarani or Awhad ad-Din 'Ali ibn Mahmud was one of the greatest Persian poets. He was born in Abivard of (now in Turkmenistan) and died in Khurasanian Balkh, now in Afghanistan, and studied science and literature at the collegiate institute in Tun (now Firdaus, Iran), becoming a famous astronomer as well as a poet. Anvari's poems were collected in a Deewan, and contains panegyrics, eulogies, satire, and others. His elegy "Tears of Khorasan", translated into English in 1789, is considered to be one of the most beautiful poems in Persian literature. The Cambridge History of Iran calls Anvari "one of the greatest figures in Persian literature". Despite their beauty, his poems often required much help with interpretation, as they were often complex and difficult to understand. Anvari's panegyric in honour of the Seljuk sultan Sultan Sanjar (1117–1157), ruler of Khorasan, won him royal favour, and allowed him to go on to enjoy...

Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, FRS (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and remains one of the most popular poets in the English language. Tennyson excelled at penning short lyrics, including "In the valley of Cauteretz", "Break, break, break", "The Charge of the Light Brigade", "Tears, idle tears" and "Crossing the Bar". Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, although In Memoriam A.H.H. was written to commemorate his best friend Arthur Hallam, a fellow poet and classmate at Trinity College, Cambridge, who was engaged to Tennyson's sister, but died from a cerebral hemorrhage before they were married. Dimitrie Barilă, cunoscut mai ales pe numele monahal Dosoftei, (n. 26 octombrie 1624, Suceava - d. 13 decembrie 1693, la Zolkiew, în Polonia, azi Nesterov, Ucraina) a fost un cărturar român, mitropolit al Moldovei, poet și traducător. În 2005 Biserica Ortodoxă Română l-a proclamat sfânt. A învățat la Iași probabil la Colegiul întemeiat în 1640 la mănăstirea “ Sf. Trei lerarhi", apoi la școala Frăției ortodoxe din Lvov, unde a făcut Studii umaniste și de limbi. Cunoștea limba elenă, latina, slavona și polona. Datorită relațiilor sale cu patriarhul Moscovei și cu Nicolae Milescu, aflat acolo, a adus din Rusia un teasc de tipografie cu litere, cu care a tipărit la Mitropolia din Iași, în românește, principalele cărți liturgice, unele traduse de el însuși. El a fost unul dintre ierarhii care au promovat introducerea limbii române în biserică.
