Alan Dean Foster

Born in New York City in 1946, Foster was raised in Los Angeles. After receiving a Bachelor\'s Degree in Political Science and a Master of Fine Arts in Cinema from UCLA (1968, l969) he spent two years as a copywriter for a small Studio City, Calif. advertising and public relations firm. His writing career began when August Derleth bought a long Lovecraftian letter of Foster\'s in 1968 and much to Foster\'s surprise, published it as a short story in Derleth\'s bi-annual magazine The Arkham Collector. Sales of short fiction to other magazines followed. His first attempt at a novel, The Tar-Aiym Krang, was bought by Betty Ballantine and published by Ballantine Books in 1972. It incorporates a number of suggestions from famed SF editor John W. Campbell. Babette Deutsch

S-a născut în 1895, la New York City. A ținut prelegeri asupra “Poeziei secolului douăzeci” la Universitatea din Columbia. Babette Deutsch este autoarea mai multor volume de poezie și critică literară. A tradus din opera lui Pușkin, Rilke și alții. Pentru operele sale literare a obținut numeroase premii, precum și titlul de Doctor honoris causa. E membră la National Institute of Arts and Letters și e considerată a fi decana literelor americane. Ian Bavitz

Ian Bavitz, Long Island, New York City, New York, USA. Acquiring his adopted moniker from a movie he had acted in with friends and adding the surname when he began throwing rhymes, Aesop Rock creates hip-hop that is potent and evocative of his home city of New York. He and his production partner Blockhead apparently derive most of their samples from records lifted from the 99 cent bins of local music stores, meaning most of the sounds on his albums are drawn from Italian disco records. The former art student from Boston University built up a strong online fanbase with a number of CD releases, including Music For Earthworms and Appleseed, before making his debut album for the Mush label in 2000 with Float. Drawing on history and mythology to inform his densely constructed soundscapes, Aesop Rock\'s dextrous flow required several listens for the impact of his lyrics to be fully understood and assimilated.

In collaboration with vocalist brother Russell, composer/keyboardist Ron Mael was the mastermind behind the skewed pop smarts and wiseguy wordplay of cult favorite Sparks. Born August 12, 1950, in Culver City, CA, Mael spent his childhood modeling young men\'s apparel for mail-order catalogues; while attending UCLA in 1970, he and Russell formed their first group, Halfnelson. Although Todd Rundgren produced the band\'s self-titled 1971 debut, their quirky, tongue-in-cheek art pop initially failed to find an audience. Don McLean

Famed for -- and ultimately defined by -- his perennial \"American Pie,\" singer/songwriter Don McLean was born October 2, 1945, in New Rochelle, NY. After getting his start in the folk clubs of New York City during the mid-\'60s, McLean struggled for a number of years, building a small following through his work with Pete Seeger on the Clearwater, a sloop that sailed up and down the eastern seaboard to promote environmental causes. Still, McLean was primarily singing in elementary schools and the like when in 1970 he wrote a musical tribute to painter Vincent Van Gogh; the project was roundly rejected by a number of labels, although MediaArts did offer him a contract to record a number of his other songs under the title Tapestry. William Carlos Williams

He was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, a town near the city of Paterson. He attended public school in Rutherford, New Jersey until 1897, then was sent to study at Château de Lancy near Geneva, Switzerland, the Lycée Condorcet in Paris, France, for two years and Horace Mann High School in New York City. Then, in 1902, he entered the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. During his time at Penn, Williams befriended Ezra Pound, Hilda Doolittle (H.D.) and the painter Charles Demuth. These friendships supported his growing passion for poetry. He received his M.D. in 1906 and spent the next four years in internships in New York City and in travel and postgraduate studies abroad (e.g., at the Univ. of Leipzig where he studied pediatrics).
