In the 1970s, Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate, lowlife characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle, which he sang about in a raspy, gravelly voice. From the '80s on, his work became increasingly theatrical as he moved into acting and composing. Growing up in southern California, Waits attracted the attention of manager Herb Cohen, who also handled Frank Zappa, and was signed by him at the beginning of the 1970s, resulting in the material later released as The Early Years and The Early Years, Vol. 2. His formal recording debut came with Closing Time (1973) on Asylum Records, an album that contained "Ol' 55," which was covered by labelmates the Eagles for their On the Border album. Waits attracted critical acclaim and a cult audience for his subsequent albums, The Heart of Saturday Night (1974), the two-LP live set Nighthawks at the Diner (1975), Small Change (1976), Foreign Affairs (1977), Blue Valentine (1978), and Heart Attack and Vine (1980)....

Jerome David Salinger (n. 1 ianuarie 1919) este un scriitor american cunoscut cel mai bine pentru romanul De veghe în lanul de secară (în engleză The Catcher in the Rye), o poveste clasică a adolescenței, care a cunoscut o popularitate durabilă de la publicarea ei în 1951. O temă majoră în opera lui Salinger este mintea activă si puternică a tânărului neadaptat și efectul izbăvitor al copilului în viețile unor astfel de oameni. Născut în New York, ca fiu al unui tată evreu și a unei mame de origine irlandeză catolică, Salinger și-a început cariera scriind povestiri pentru reviste din New York. ABAnthony Burgess
Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) a fost un romancier și un critic englez, celebru pentru scrierea romanului său distopic Portocala mecanică, ecranizat de Stanley Kubrick. Este de asemenea un compozitor britanic. John Burgess Wilson se naște pe 25 februarie 1917 la Manchester. N-o să primească cel de-al doilea prenume, Anthony, decât mai târziu, iar pseudonimul său literar bine cunoscut nu-l va adopta înainte de 1956. La vârsta de un an, din cauza gripei spaniole din 1918, moare mama sa care fusese o actriță și dansatoare minoră cunoscută, potrivit lui însuși Burgess, sub numele de scenă The Beautiful Belle Burgess. Tatăl, Joseph Wilson, fusese printre altele, ofițer în armată, pianist, vânzător de enciclopedii etc. Se recăsătorește cu o cârciumăreasă. Burgess îl descrie ca „cel mai absent alcoolic care s-a pretins vreodată a fi un tată”. De fapt, Burgess a fost crescut de mătușa lui, iar mai târziu de mama vitregă. Kostas Varnalis (1884-1974) a fost romancier și poet grec. Opera sa include: Lumina care arde (1922) Poemele scalvilor asediați (1927) Adevarata apologie a lui Socrate (1933)(o lucrare în proză) Engleză Kostas Varnalis was a Greece writer and poet of the 20th Century. Varnalis was born on February 14, 1884, in Pyrgos, Eastern Rumelia (now Burgas, Bulgaria). He was educated in Philippoupolis (now Plovdiv) and received a scholarship from the Greek community of Eastern Rumelia to study literature in Athens. In 1909, Varnalis was appointed to a teaching post in Greece. He received a scholarship in 1919 for post-graduate studies in Paris, France. The two years he spent in France changed him radically as a person: Varnalis was deeply moved by the suffering of common people during World War I and greatly influenced by the October Revolution in Russia. He returned to Greece and acquired the label "leftist" which led to dismissal from his teaching post during the Pangalos dictatorship in 1925....
