LHLafcadio Hearn
Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (27 June 1850 - 26 September 1904), also known as Koizumi Yakumo (СÈȘ°Ëë…?) after gaining Japanese citizenship, was an author, best known for his books about Japan. He is especially well-known for his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories, such as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. Hearn was born in Lefkada (the origin of his middle name), one of the Greek Ionian Islands. He was the son of Surgeon-major Charles Bush Hearn (of County Offaly, Ireland) and Rosa Antonia Kassimati, who had been born on Kythera, an island in the Myrtoon Pelagos (currently in the municipality of Athens). His father was stationed in Lefkada during the British occupation of the islands. Lafcadio was initially baptized Patricio Lefcadio Tessima Carlos Hearn in the Greek Orthodox Church. Roger Woddis, poet: born London 17 May 1917; married Joan Hobson (one son, one daughter; marriage dissolved); died London 16 July 1993. Roger Woddis was a writer and humorous poet. One of his most famous poems, Ethics for Everyman, deals with double-morality of ethical principles. His early writing career included some involvement with Unity Theatre, London, where he contributed material to a number of revues. His poetry featured regularly in Radio Times and other periodicals in the 1970s. During much of the 1980s and early '90s, he had his own weekly poem in the humour magazine Punch: titled "Subverse". This consisted each week of a humorously subversive political poem, often dealing with recent events. Braulio Arenas (La Serena, April 4, 1913 - †Santiago May 12, 1988) was a Chilean poet and writer, founder of the surrealist Mandrágora group. Braulio Arenas lived most of his youth in the north of Chile, moving in his teens to Talca to study. There he encountered Teófilo Cid and Enrique Gómez Correa among others, and participated to literary activities with them. Years later, he started law studies in Santiago, which he soon abandoned to focus on writing. Through Eduardo Anguita, he met Vicente Huidobro, father of "Creationism" literary movement, which disputed literary inovations with Dada and Surrealism. Influenced by these European currents, Arenas founded with some friends, in 1938, the Surrealist group Mandrágora. This circle supported the Popular Front government. Dylan Marlais Thomas was born on October 27, 1914 in Swansea, Glamorganshire (Wales). He was educated at Swansea Grammar School and became well-known for his obscure poetry and amusing plays and prose. Before the publishing of Thomas' first book in 1934, he worked as a reporter for The South Wales Daily Post, in Swansea, (1931-1932) and as a free-lance writer from 1933. "18 Poems", Thomas' first book, was published as the result of a prize. Thomas was only 19 when this volume of poetry was released. For him reading, living, the writings of so many did not seem to be enough, so he began writing his own stories that still echo in my memory and in my heart. I remember that one day I went to him and asked “What are you writing about?”. Looking at me for only a second and returning his eyes at the ink stained notebook he answered: “My life”. Regretful, I confess that that was the last dialogue we had. After that I began reading, reading everything he was writing. Two years after his death, I had met someone who changed everything. I stopped reading and began writing myself. It was such a new feeling. It seemed to be never ending. It still feels. Since the first time, you may think I am exaggerating, but it really was the first time I saw her when I felt this sudden urge of writing. Words like “Thank you” seem meaningless compared to the things that you have done for me.
