you've always known it to be there
would spoil you, indulge you most obligingly
never scold you
not a word except for “yes” and “no”
occasionally
you startle at the white glove
concealed by the impeccable black suit
offering you champagne and caviar
keeping the tray full
politely
it occurs to you gratitude is appropriate
perhaps a little time off,
a welcome leave
but dignified
it serves you tea in the lounge
and ushers you as would a guest
who overstayed his visit
